Washington DC;September 25, 2002
: Britain's Sikh community in general, and the organizers of last Sunday's (Sept. 22, 2002 - in the Wolverhampton Gurdwara Sahib in England) well-attended meet in particular, deserve a salute for their pioneer role in getting bipartisan support of Members of the British Parliament to the proposal that Sikhs in the UK be registered in the census, and other official counts, as Sikhs and not Indians.Last Sunday's meeting in the UK (which packed the huge Wolverhampton Gurdwara and which was adorned with photographs of the greatest Sikh of the 20th century, Sant Bhindranwale and which resounded from time to time with cheers of Khalistan Zindabad) was organized by a Sikh patriot, Sirdar Amrik Singh Gill and his associates of the 'Sikh Secretariat', a UK-based organization. The meeting was addressed among others by a senior ruling Labor party Member of Parliament, Rob Marris and
the opposition Conservative party shadow cabinet minister for International Development and Women's Affairs, Caroline Spelman.Caroline Spelman, the Conservative party shadow minister, did not mince any words at the meeting and declared last Sunday that, "the Conservatives will give Sikhs the option to register as Sikhs and not Indians when the party comes to power." Spelman earlier said in her address to the gathering that: "At best that is discourteous, at worst it deprives you of proper monitoring of what your needs are." She further said that, "it was extraordinary that an opportunity to find out had been missed in the 2001 census." Caroline Spelman also said that the Labour government should monitor Sikhs separately and "if they fail, then that will be a task for a Conservative administration to deliver on".The announcement follows backing to the Sikh's demands by other senior shadow ministers of the opposition Conservative Party earlier.
Labor party member of parliament, Rob Marris, a time-tested good friend of the Sikhs (he is also reported to be very active in the 'All Party Panjabis in Britain Parliamentary Group') expressed strong support for the Sikh Agenda that the Sikh Secretariat has produced. The agenda calls for Sikhs to be registered as separate from Indians in Britain, and calls for self-determination in the South Asian Sikh Homeland of Punjab, captured in the Indian map on 15 August, 1947, when Imperial Britain retreated in haste from South Asia after World War 11.
Rob Marris addressed specifically the demand for Khalistan raised at the meeting. He said, to thunderous applause, that Khalistan "is an issue dear to your hearts I can see by looking down the hall. Those in the Indian subcontinent, who peacefully and democratically push for self-determination for that part of the Indian subcontinent, their opinion for self-determination, their right for an independent Khalistan should not be suppressed." Rob Marris said it would not be right for parties in Britain to decide whether there should be self-determination in that part of the subcontinent. "But it would be right for people to democratically and peacefully express their opinions." Bravo Mr. Rob Morris!
The success of last Sunday's Sikh gathering in the UK, mentioned above, can be measured from a 'nervous' dispatch of the London correspondent of the Hindustan Times, a New Delhi English language daily newspaper infamous for its Hinduvta tilt. The correspondent, Sanjay Suri, in a Wolverhampton-datelined dispatch, headlined, "Labor MP stokes Khalistan fire on Britain," published today (September 24, 2002) in the Hindustan Times, described the Sikh function held at the Wolverhampton Gurdwara, (See: >
http://www.hindustantimes.com/news/181_70514,00050003.htm <) in the following words, and we quote him verbatim, that, "Rob Marris, who is treasurer of the All Party Panjabis in Britain Parliamentary Group, expressed strong support for the Sikh Agenda that the Sikh Secretariat has produced. The agenda calls for Sikhs to be registered as separate from Indians in Britain, and also calls for self-determination in the Punjab. Marris addressed specifically the demand for Khalistan raised at the meeting. Bob Marris, a senior Labour MP, supported the demand for a separate listing of Sikhs in Britain and said that there would be many opportunities to do so before the 2011 census. The move (to count Sikhs as Sikhs and not as Indians) is politically loaded. It would give Sikhs the option to declare themselves Sikhs and not Indians. It would mean that the estimated 1.2 million Indian population in Britain could fall to about half of that on the records." End quote. The Suri dispatch in the Hindustan Times also reported that. "The developments at the meeting Sunday mark
rapid strides the Khalistani group has made in Britain in recent weeks. There has been little evidence of support for the Khalistanis among Sikhs, but strong Conservative Party backing to this group pursuing what they call the 'Sikh agenda' has given them new prominence. Amrik Singh Gill, who heads the group Sikh Secretariat , that called the meeting, said Khalistan 'is the only way out' for Sikhs and that, 'we will get our own rule'. Posters of separatist leader Bhindranwale lined the walls of the hall where the meeting was held."Sirdar Amrik Singh Gill,
and his associates of the 'Sikh Secretariat', all deserve the gratitude and salute of the Sikh nation for giving a 'wake-up' call to the three million strong Sikh diaspora which was in deep slumber on this issue of the Census. The diaspora Sikhs, inspired by the example of the British Sikhs, should now muster their resources, and organize themselves, in which ever country they may be living in - specially those living in Canada, the US, Malaysia, Australia, Singapore, Germany, France, Norway, Netherlands, Belgium and New Zealand - to not only lobby the Census authorities to create a new category ('Sikhs') but also inter alia make a determined effort to register to Vote, whereever they may be domiciled, which will empower the Sikh minority communities in the democratic world. Last but not the least, it is important to point out that the vast majority of Sikhs have concluded a long time ago, like Sirdar Amrik Singh Gill and other compatriots in the UK, that a democratic, egalitarian Sikh buffer state of Khalistan where justice will prevail (stretching from the River Jumna in the East to the Pakistan border on the West, Kashmir in the North and China on the North East, in control of its natural resources like river water and free access to the STAN'S of Central Asia and our holy shrines in Pakistan) is the ONLY way out for the millions of Sikhs living in misery under the Brahmin's yoke in the Sikh homeland of Punjab which was 'captured', through intrigue and false promises, by the world's largest dystopian Castocracy - India - on August 15, 1947.
